FAQs: What To Do Before Surgery

Preparing for oral surgery can cause you to feel a lot of things – for the most part, patients tend to experience a lot of anticipation. This may include some feelings of nervousness, stress, or even excitement. Whatever the case, we often find that the more prepared you become, the more confident and relaxed you feel about your upcoming visit. Fortunately, getting yourself ready for surgery is simple as long as you know what to expect. For the details you seek, we are happy to provide answers to some of the most common questions we receive about pre-anesthesia and surgery prep.

Pre-Anesthesia and Surgery FAQs

Question: What do I need to do to prepare for general anesthesia or IV sedation? Do I need to fast in preparation?

Answer: It is very important that you secure a ride from a loved one or friend who will drive you to and from your appointment. You will not be able to drive yourself home once sedated. In addition, you must avoid eating, drinking, consuming alcohol, and smoking for at least eight hours before your visit.

Question: Is there anything I need to consider before my appointment other than being careful to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking?

Answer: Yes, we ask that you show up with a smile that you have recently brushed. In addition, if you need to discuss payment or have questions, it is essential that you do so before your oral surgery.

Question: What if there’s something that makes me feel a little calmer about surgery? Can I bring a good luck charm or special blanket with me? What if I want to listen to music when I arrive?

Answer: Please call us if you have special requests, no matter what they are. We will discuss your options and do our best to ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed during your oral surgery visit.
