After Oral Surgery: What to Expect

If you have scheduled an oral surgery procedure, or if you have a loved one in that situation, you may be wondering what to expect after the oral surgery is completed. While every situation is different, there are some guidelines that fit most situations and procedures. We want every patient to be well informed and comfortable before, during and after oral surgery. Your consultation appointment is an excellent time to ask questions about your specific oral surgery aftercare instructions. We provide written aftercare instructions, and will always take the time to keep you informed.

May I Drive Myself Home?

Before your surgery, we will have fully discussed the driving restrictions that may be in place. In many cases, you will want to make arrangement to have someone drive you home.

Will I be Uncomfortable Afterwards?

After oral surgery, you may see swelling and discoloration around the surgery area. There may be tenderness and sensitivity in nearby areas as well. If over-the-counter or prescription pain medication is suggested, you will be given instructions and any needed prescriptions prior to leaving our office. Every patient experience is different, but we are available by phone at all times after your surgery, in case of quesitions.

Do I Need a Special Diet?

After oral surgery, we may ask to modify your diet to include primarily soft foods, or foods cut in small pieces to avoid opening the jaw to a wide degree. Most patients are encouraged to drink plenty of liquids. Foods that are nutritious, soft and easy to chew are usually good choices. Hard foods, or foods that are sticky or chewy should usually be avoided. We may also have special instructions regarding toothbrushing, and the use of dental appliances such as dentures or a mouthguard, immediately after surgery as well.
