Enjoy A Comfortable Experience Thanks To Sedation

santa rosa sedationWe offer oral surgery to take on serious issues that could be too complex for your general dentist or orthodontist, and we want to make sure you enjoy a comfortable treatment experience during your visit. Which is why we offer dental sedation! In today’s blog, your Santa Rosa, CA, oral surgeons talk about ensuring patient comfort with dental sedation.

When You Need Calming Medications

When do you need to receive dental sedation? We could recommend this for patients undergoing more extensive procedures, such as tooth extraction and dental implant placement, as this can ensure they feel comfortable. If a patient has special needs or dental anxiety, then our calming medications could help them reach a relaxed state with little to no memory of the procedure. We believe your visit should be a positive experience that helps you obtain a healthier and more attractive smile. Which is why we’re happy to offer three forms of calming.

Choosing Your Sedation Option

With three different options, how do we choose which one is right for you? Our team will take a number of different factors into consideration, such as your age, weight, and your medical history. We will also look at any medications you are currently taking, as well as your anxiety levels.

Nitrous Oxide, Oral, and IV

The mildest and most commonly prescribed option is nitrous oxide, sometimes referred to as laughing gas. This is administered through a mask over the nose. You breathe in a gas and enter a state of calm with little memory of the procedure, while remaining conscious and able to respond to the dentistry. The effects can be adjusted during the treatment and wear off once the procedure ends, so you can drive yourself home or return to work or school.

For a deeper state of relaxation, we have an oral option taken in a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure. You may need to avoid food and drink for a few hours before the procedure begins. You enter a very deep state of calm but remain conscious. You will have no memory of the procedure, but will need someone to take you home as the effects take time to wear off.

The deepest form of calming is IV, which is administered intravenously. You enter a deep sleep-like state with no memory of the procedure. The effects take time to wear off, so have someone ready to bring you home. If you have any questions about dental sedation, then contact our team today to learn more.
