Quiz: Who Qualifies for Dental Implants?

Do you have missing teeth? A recent study conducted by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons shows that 69% of patients between the ages of 35 and 44 have lost at least 1 permanent tooth. When you lose a tooth you develop an increased risk of further tooth loss, misalignment, and other oral health concerns. In order to replace missing teeth we may recommend dental implants.

  3. True or False: Without adequate bone support the patient may require a bone grafting.
  4. True or False: Dental implants can last for decades.

Answer Key

  1. True. The implant portion is a post made from biocompatible titanium, which means the post can bond with the jawbone for security. An abutment is then added to the post that will hold a restoration in place. Made from a dental crown, the restoration completes the process and ensures the new tooth looks completely natural.
  1. True. Advanced gum disease, also known as periodontitis, can cause tooth loss and potentially lead to implant failure. However, as long as the periodontal disease is managed then there is little risk of failure.
  1. True. Occasionally, loss of jawbone height and/or width due to tooth loss can mean there isn’t enough jawbone tissue to support the post. However, a bone grafting procedure can often be performed, restoring the lost tissue.
  1. True. On average, a well-maintained dental implant can last as long as 25 years. In some cases, they have been known to last even longer. We will provide detailed information on maintaining the strength of your new tooth and the health of your smile.
