When you have a serious oral health concern, like wisdom teeth soon to erupt, a jaw that needs surgery, or missing teeth that need dental implants, you benefit from oral surgery. Our team wants to help you feel comfortable throughout the procedure, even if you’re undergoing care for facial trauma or to strengthen a weakened jawbone! In today’s blog, your Santa Rosa, CA, oral surgeons talk about our approach to anesthesia and sedation.
Planning Your Oral Surgery
You may be referred to our office, or you could contact our team directly for a consultation. We will look at your dental and medical records, and we often work alongside your general dentist or orthodontist to ensure treatment can continue smoothly as needed. Our doctors work with the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Trauma Team, and have experience in handling complex surgeries. We follow the same strict guidelines as hospital operating rooms too! We will take detailed images with digital x-rays and CBCT imagery, so we can make a diagnosis with precision and accuracy, and plan the surgery carefully.
Local Anesthetic
Our team can add a local anesthetic directly to the area being treated, which numbs it to ensure you feel comfortable as we begin treatment.
Dental Sedation
Our team can also offer dental sedation! We have three options to choose from, and will select one for you based on multiple factors. For example, we look at your age, medical history, any medications you are taking, and your anxiety levels. The mild option is nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. We administer this with a mask over your nose, so you breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of calm. You will be conscious but likely will have no memory of the procedure afterward. The effects end quickly so you can drive home or return to work as needed.
Oral conscious sedation is a deeper state of calm and is administered through a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure. You will have no memory of the procedure and will likely need to have someone bring you home afterward, as the effects take time to wear off. The deepest form is IV sedation, and again hour will need someone on hand to bring you home. We will have a trained anesthesiologist monitoring you the entire time as well! If you have any questions about our approach to dental sedation, then contact our team today to learn more. We want to help you Enjoy your time in the office!
