Because your teeth consist of more than just the crowns that reside above your gums, prosthetics that only replace these crowns cannot fully restore your lost tooth/teeth’s functions. The point of dental implants is to provide the stability that your dental crown, partial denture, or full denture will need to more closely mimic your healthy, natural teeth.

What a Tooth Consists Of

Underneath your gum tissues, the root of a tooth extends into your jawbone, anchored into a socket and held in place with the help of strong periodontal tissues. The root’s purpose is two-fold; to supply the tooth’s nerves and tissues with nutrients, and to stabilize the tooth as it’s exposed to the pressures of biting and chewing.

What Dental Implants Provide

When a tooth root is lost and the socket in your jawbone is left empty, the bone becomes reabsorbed so that your body can utilize its minerals and nutrients elsewhere. Over time, the lack of a root to stimulate the jaw can lead to bone degradation, which in turn can lead to further tooth loss. In addition to stabilizing your dental crown or denture, dental implants also provide the stimulation that your jawbone thrives on, thereby helping it maintain a healthy supply of nutrition.

Each dental implant is created as a single post. The number of implants you require will depend on several factors, including how many teeth you’ve lost and how large your prosthesis is. For instance, a single dental implant capped with a crown can be utilized to replace a single lost tooth. Questions About Bone Grafting

Jawbone grafting describes a variety of surgical techniques designed to strengthen the upper and/or lower jawbone, often in preparation for dental implant placement. By adding density and volume to the bone, your jaw can better support the implant posts and the restoration attached to them. However, bone grafting does more than prepare your jaw for implant placement; the procedure improves the structural integrity of your smile, reducing your risks of further oral health problems in the future.

What is bone grafting?

The point of a bone graft is to add bone, or a biocompatible bone-like material, to your maxilla (upper jawbone), mandible (lower jawbone), or both. In most cases, it is preferable to utilize your own bone, such as from your chin or other area of your body. Donor bone and synthetic bone materials can also be utilized as an alternative.

How can a jawbone graft help me?

A stronger, denser jawbone is beneficial for many reasons, though you may not realize you need one until you’ve been examined by an oral surgeon. If you’ve suffered from severe gum disease, or if you’ve lost a significant amount of teeth, then your jawbone may have deteriorated, which can lead to further tooth loss and a sunken appearance in your surrounding facial features. Bone grafting may also be recommended if;

  • You have a congenital jaw deformity (meaning you were born with the condition)
  • You suffer a certain type of crack or break in your jawbone
  • You still retain your natural teeth, but the bone around them has grown weak and you are at risk of losing one or more of them

Are bone grafts and sinus lifts the same thing?

Though bone grafting is a broad and general term, a sinus lift is performed particularly on your upper jawbone, or maxilla. Thinner than the mandible, the maxilla may not have sufficient room between the bone and the maxillary sinuses that rest above it. A sinus lift involves “lifting” the sinus floor so we can graft bone to the maxilla, making it longer, wider, and stronger.

Local Oral Surgeon to Volunteer in Medical Triage at CDA Cares Pomona

Pomona, CA (November 18, 2014) – Nearly a quarter of adults between the ages of 20-64 have untreated tooth decay or cavities. Considering the serious impact that oral health has on overall well-being, it is critical for people to understand the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene. Christopher S. Daniel, DDS, MD, FACS, consistently conveys this message to all of his patients at Santa Rosa Oral Surgery, and will further support the ability for patients to get the help they need at this year’s CDA Cares Clinic in Pomona, CA.

Dr. Daniel will volunteer in the medical triage area at the second CDA Cares Clinic to be held in Southern California, which will take place November 21-22 at the Pomona Fairplex. He will provide patients with a thorough examination to help determine whether their state of health is optimal enough to undergo oral surgery procedures.

“It is necessary for people to undergo a thorough history and physical with medical treatment, and optimization where needed,” said Dr. Daniel.

Each year, the CDA Foundation hosts CDA Cares Clinics in various locations across the country to provide care to approximately 2,000 patients at no cost. Even further, CDA Cares Clinics support continued health and wellness by educating the public, media and policymakers about the significance of good oral health, and the necessity to determine long-term solutions for patients.

Dr. Daniel will not only provide care to those who are healthy enough to undergo surgery, but he will also assist in preventing those who are not fit to undergo surgery from getting treatment until they get their medical conditions under control. Conditions that may be harmful to routine dental and oral surgery patients include uncontrolled high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes and others.

“I often see patients who need oral surgery, but they are simply ineligible to undergo any procedure safely before they get control of their other existing medical conditions. The risk for complications during and after dental procedures and/or surgery are just too high,” said Dr. Daniel. “This goes to show just how important it is to take care of every aspect of your health – especially your mouth.”

The CDA Foundation held their first Clinic in 2012, and have since provided $7.5 million in care to more than 10,000 patients. The CDA Cares Clinic in Pomona this week will provide patients with teeth cleanings, fillings, extractions, education, and resources for continued care.

Dr. Daniel received a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of California in Davis, studied Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, earned a medical doctorate degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and is currently practicing at both the Santa Rosa office locations. Although Dr. Daniel enjoys all aspects of oral surgery practice, he specializes in extracting wisdom teeth and placing dental implants, and holds membership in other professional societies, including the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the California Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (CALAOMS), the American Dental Association (ADA), the California Dental Association (CDA), and the Redwood Empire Dental Society.  He is also on staff at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital taking part in the care of trauma patients.

By meeting the College’s stringent membership requirements, Fellows of the College have earned the distinguished right to use the designation of “FACS” (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after their names. An applicant for Fellowship must fulfill the following requirements in order to earn the FACS title:

  • A degree from an approved medical school
  • Completion of basic surgical requirements
  • A valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the country they practice
  • Completion of three years of surgical practice
  • Current hospital appointment
  • Current surgical practice

The surgeon’s acceptance as a Fellow of the College must be approved by three-fourths of the Board of Regents.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient. The College is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Its achievements have established it as an important advocate for all surgical patients.
