When you undergo oral surgery, this is because you have a serious oral health issue that needs to be treated. We want you to feel comfortable during this time, even if you have dental anxiety. In today’s blog, your Santa Rosa , CA, oral and maxillofacial surgeons talk about dental sedation.
Dental Anesthesia
We want you to feel comfortable and relaxed throughout your procedure. We understand that sometimes people have very real fears of the dentist, and their anxiety could be tied to lack of experience visiting dental professionals or due to a bad previous experience. But our team is experienced in both dental and hospital settings. We’ve been trained in multiple types of anesthesia, and we also employ the latest technology and medications. Your health and safety are paramount, and we have experience in assisting everyone from pediatrics to elderly patients. Our team is licensed and accredited and we always follow the strictest guidelines. In fact, we use the same guidelines that hospitals operating rooms do!
Dental Sedation
We also have dental sedation, which can be very helpful for those with anxiety or who will be undergoing extensive treatment options. We have three options available. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask over the nose, and the effects wear off completely when the procedure ends. You can even drive yourself home! Oral sedation is taken in pill or liquid form prior to treatment and offers a deep state of calm, one in which you will need time to wear off. A friend or family member can bring you home. The deepest form is IV, and you will be monitored throughout the process by a trained anesthesiologist, who can adjust levels as needed. We take your age, weight, medical history, and anxiety levels into account before we prescribe an option to you.
Oral Surgery
When do we recommend these options? We offer a comprehensive selection of surgical procedures, from general tooth extractions to dental implant placement. We can improve bite symmetry and balance with jaw surgery, and also address facial trauma. Our team can even rebuild weakened portions of the jaw with jawbone grafting or sinus lifts, making them ready to receive dental implants. Our goal is to restore your smile to optimal oral health and function, with results that look great too. We often work alongside your general dentist and orthodontist throughout the process too.
